As Chief Engineer, Vice President, and later President of Chemical Design, Inc. (1980–2002), Thomas G. O’Connor teamed up with Walter E. Schmid and Robert Alexis to invent the activated-alumina/13X split-bed TSA system — the breakthrough that swept the industry and was quickly adopted by Linde, Air Products, and Air Liquide, and is still the heart of virtually every large cryogenic air-separation plant on the planet. From CDI’s original 1960s molecular-sieve plants pioneered by founders James Meyer and Walter Schmid, Tom took TSA to the next level and wrote the playbook the world still follows. Today, through Adsorption Applications, he brings that battle-tested, never-published know-how straight to the engineers building tomorrow’s hydrogen, biogas, and direct-air-capture plants — because the toughest purification problems they’re facing? He solved them thirty years ago.
